Inside the CTT+ Certification Exam

All trainers aspire to excel and all trainers hope to land the best paying jobs with prestigious corporations and institutions. But landing that perfect job is easier said than done. Many trainers struggle to make ends meet because they simply cannot compete with the “certified” competition.
CompTIA’s CTT+ certification can add that prestige to your resume. Computer technology trainers as well as trainers, facilitators, and instructors in other realms of business and education have discovered that the CompTIA CTT+ certification is a valuable asset in their search for career positions.

Cross-Industry Credential
CompTIA developed the CTT+ certification to include not just computer technology trainers, but all trainers in all industries. This widely recognized certification covers corporate training, computer technology training, classroom instruction, and corporate facilitation. The CTT+ certification’s wider scope allows certified trainers more opportunities and provides them with valuable skills that will benefit them in any training situation.

“The CompTIA CTT+ certification exam was created to eliminate the redundancies among the numerous vendor-sponsored instructor certification programs,” — CompTIA website.

Once a trainer earns the CTT+ certification, they can apply it to a wide variety of industries. This vendor-neutral structure allows one who is CTT+ certified to apply their training to all industries that provide technical training and education. In fact, the CTT+ is recommended and required by many corporations like IBM and Cisco.

CTT+ — A Measure of Instructor Mastery
The CTT+ (Certified Technical Trainer) proves that you possess exceptional instructor knowledge, presentation skills, and classroom performance skills.

“Those holding the CompTIA CTT+ certification have proven excellence in preparation, presentation, communication, facilitation, and evaluation in a classroom environment.” — CompTIA website.

The trainer’s instructional skill set will be measured across a wide spectrum of training techniques such as: knowledge of learning styles, needs assessment, adult learner needs, teaching methods, and many more instructor-led training techniques.

Inside the CTT+ Computer Based Exam and the CTT+ Video Exam
The CTT+ certification is earned by passing a 2 part exam:
1.  Computer-based test (CBT)
2.   Video-based test (VBT)
The CTT+ computer based exam assesses the candidate’s knowledge, and the CTT+ exam demonstrates that knowledge in action; in an actual classroom setting. The computer-based test is composed of 95 questions, and the candidate is given 90 minutes to complete the exam. The CTT+ computer based exam is available in English only, but the video assessment portion can be submitted in either English or Japanese. The video-based exam is 20 minutes in time length.
The CTT+ computer based exam measures the candidate’s knowledge in the following 5 domains:

  1. Planning Prior to the Course
  2. Methods and Media for Instructional Delivery
  3. Instructor Credibility and Communications
  4. Group Facilitation
  5. Evaluate the Training Event

Domain One measures your ability to assess and configure the classroom environment for effective learning. It also assesses your ability to determine student needs and how to tailor your lessons to meet those needs.
Domain Two measures your knowledge of different learning styles and methods of instructional delivery. This portion also assesses your ability to use various instructional media such as flipcharts, handouts, slide presentations, and video.
Domain Three measures your communication abilities like remaining positive and professional in all teaching situations. This covers appearance, non-verbal communication, personal grooming, and the ability to handle student questions and concerns in a positive and non-critical way.
Domain Four assesses you in your learning facilitator role. It measures your ability to develop and maintain group-learning dynamics and a learner-centered environment. Also, your effective questioning skills will be examined as well as your active listening skills.
Domain Five assesses your ability to reflect on your own teaching performance and assess the progression of your students throughout the lesson. You will be expected to know effective surveying techniques for this section of the test.
It is recommended that a candidate take a practice exam before undertaking the real one. Practice test questions from a competent training program such as PrepMasters can help you prepare for this intense computer-based test.

CTT+ Skills Assessment Video Exam
The skills assessment video portion of the CTT+ examination is where you show off the instructor techniques you have learned. In a 20-minute video, candidates give an actual instructional performance which will be reviewed by professional evaluators. You must also fill out a Video Documentation Form that gives additional information about the video-taped instructional performance.

Scoring
To receive CompTIA’s CTT+ certification, candidates must pass both the computer-based test and the video skills assessment. The minimum passing score of 655 is needed to pass the computer-based test, and a score of at least 36 points must be achieved to pass the video-based test.
If a candidate fails one or both of the tests, he/she will receive a final score, the minimum passing score, and diagnostic indicators. The candidate can then use this information to determine the areas of their strengths and weaknesses to better prepare them for a retake of the failed exam.

CTT+ Certified!
After passing the CTT+ certification exam, the newly certified trainer will easily stand out from the rest of applicants for training positions. The prestige and respect for this certification are just a few reasons why you, as a trainer, should consider embarking on this worthwhile journey.
